CLUB HISTORY

Dart Totnes is the oldest rowing club in the South West of England. The original club, Dart Rowing Club, was formed in 1861 by the ‘businessmen’ of Totnes. It was joined later by a club for the working men of the town, Totnes Rowing Club. The two Clubs merged to form Dart Totnes Amateur Rowing.

For many years the Club survived in a series of temporary buildings which provided limited boat storage and very basic changing facilities. However in the mid 1980s the Club received planning permission for the development of a purpose built clubhouse on the opposite side of the river. The new clubhouse was completed in 1984 after considerable fundraising and building by the members themselves. The Longmarsh site on Steamer Quay Road provides the Club with what is still the best combination of Clubhouse and water training facilities in the south west.

Club membership doubled in the mid nineties and the boat fleet was boosted by a grant aid award from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts in 1995. A further big step forward came in 2002 when the Club joined Project Oarsome and linked with 2 local schools. This not only boosted Club equipment but allowed the Club to tap into local talent at a young age.
