City of Bristol Head Race - Sunday 2nd March, 2003
Unexpected sunshine greeted Dart Totnes ARC on Sunday for the City of Bristol Head Race, where although several rowers were unable to take part due to illness the results of the day were pleasing.
The Dart-Totnes mens S24+ A crew of Terry Sandercock, Stephen Wilson, Rob Wilson and Richard Carter had a pleasing row in the 1st Division in a time of 00:12:26.00. Due to illness, the same four were required to row again in the 2nd division and acheived the time of 00:12:10.00 which was the fastest coxed four time of the day. Both crews were coxed by Owen Small. Dart Totnes thus securing 1st and 2nd places in the mens S24+ with Poole RC in third place. The Dart Totnes WS24+ crew of Lizzie Broad, Sally Dayment, Sheila Lamkin and Maggie Hawkyard also rowed in the Ist division although they had no competition at S2. They completed the course comfortably in 00:14:13.00 coxed by Pete Knapman.
WS34+ was represented by Lissie Poland, Katie Wilson, Sheila Lamkin and Debbie Hutchimgs and they had a good, comfortable row, completing the course in 00:14:46.00, one minute behind Exeter RC but ahead of Bristol Arial by approx. the same.
The J162x crew of Peter Kerswell- Jensen and Will Hampton were beaten by Upper Thames, who were then later disqualified.
Kieran Hughes of Dart Totnes finished ahead of BOARC by 16 seconds, to take the mens S31x.A frustrating yet exciting race was seen in the womens
J182x with yet unbeaten Dart Totnes ladies, Pennie Lamkin and Katie Wilson getting off to a good strong start but unfortunately subsequently clashing with a WS2x who were on the course still - after regaining the course the two crews clashed again twice more before Dart Totnes could get past them and finally take first place ahead of Avon County!Peter Kerswell - Jensen was third in mens J152x with Upper Thames and Avon County in 1st and 2nd places respectively. The Dart Totnes womens S38+ was affected by illness but the Sunday crew of Pennie Lamkin, Katie Wilson, Lissie Poland, Debbie Hutchings, Sheila Lamkin, Sally Dayment, Lizzie Broad and Maggie Hawkyard with Pete Knapman coxing finished a gallant joint third with UWE in the time of 00:13:43:00 with Exeter University and Exeter RC finishing in 1st and 2nd places
respectively. Finally, in the mens J162x - Will Hampton finished in 2nd place behind Upper Thames B, holding off Upper Thames A who finished in 3rd place. Brave Katie Wilson and Sheila Lamkin rowed in all three of the 3,500m divisions!
