Originally from Salcombe, a family of boatbuilders, Edgar started rowing for Imperial College London who won in the 1945 Henley Peace Regatta. After a career in the navy and a break of over 40 years, Edgar came to row for Dart Totnes in 1990 where he has enjoyed great success as a rower and a sculler and has in that time held positions such as Chairman and Captain and has remained on the committee until recently. As a veteran H2 sculler, Edgar has to travel quite a distance to meet competition. As well as a vast number of national successes, he also has a number of world titles including the FISA Masters -to name but a few, he has competed at Budapest,Yugoslavia, Belgium and Munich. He has raced in the Head of the Charles, Massachussetts,USA and has rowed the Boston Marathon several times as well as having rowed in many composite crews with clubs such as; Lea Rowing Club, Worcester, Derby and an American Eight, winning World Championship medals. Not surprising that he has worn out two hips in the process! As a committed club member, Edgar has carried out countless boat repairs over the years, towed boats to regattas and generally made himself available to be of help to everyone, on top of his own training schedule, which remains as rigorous as ever. His contribution over the past years is much appreciated by the club and he will be missed. Edgar leaves us with his motto which is 'The last one alive wins' . It has been translated into Norwegian and inscribed on a Dart Totnes Oar which was presented by the club who has also made him an Honorary life member. Everyone at Dart Totnes wish Edgar and his wife Pat (long-suffering sculling widow)a wonderful new life in Tonsberg, Norway where Edgar insists that his rowing will continue at the local club, competing at the World FISA Masters in central France this year!
